What Do My BMW Dashboard Light Means?

February 19th, 2021 by

Whether you’re a first-time BMW owner or have driven BMWs for years, whenever you notice one of the symbols on your dashboard light up, you have likely experienced concern. Instantly, you may wonder what this symbol means, frantically searching for your owner’s manual to get a better understanding. Understanding what each symbol means ahead of time is important to your peace of mind, and can help you easily diagnose issues as soon as they happen. Different BMW warning lights mean different things and the severity of the meaning varies depending on the indicator color:

Red – Communicates a warning that requires immediate attention
Yellow – Communicates a warning that is not critical but requires attention as soon as possible
Green – Communicates that BMW features or technology are currently in use

BMW DASHBOARD WARNING LIGHTS: RED LIGHTS

While not every dashboard warning light will indicate an urgent issue, red BMW warning lights require immediate attention. Common red BMW warning lights include:

  • Braking System Warning Light: Displays as a circle with an exclamation mark in the center. This symbol indicates that there is a serious issue with the main braking system, likely that the fluid is too low. You will need to visit a BMW service center immediately as it is unsafe to continue driving your vehicle.
  • Parking Brake Warning Light: Displays as BRAKE. This indicates that your parking brake is on. If the light remains on as you release the parking brake, you will need to visit a service center.
  • Safety Belt Indicator Light: Displays as a person with a seatbelt across their body. This indicator light will flash or light up and signal a sound when the front passenger or driver needs to put their seatbelt on.
  • Airbag Warning Light: Displays as a person buckled up in their seatbelt with a circle in front of them. If this warning light is lit up, there is a problem with your belt tensioners and/or airbag system. You will want to have a trusted service technician inspect this immediately.

BMW DASHBOARD WARNING LIGHTS: YELLOW LIGHTS

While yellow BMW warning lights aren’t typically as serious as red BMW warning lights, they will still require your attention. Common yellow BMW warning lights include:

  • Tire Pressure Monitor: Displays as an exclamation point within a horseshoe shape. This warning light is triggered when one or more of your BMW’s tires are under-inflated. If this indicator lights up in yellow, tire pressure is down by about 10%. If this indicator lights up in red, your tire has deflated rapidly.
  • Antilock Braking System Light. Displays as ABS. This warning light means that the driver stability control systems, including ABS and Tire Pressure Monitor, have failed. If this light comes on, you can continue driving with reduced braking and driving stability. Until you have the system checked, you will need to drive cautiously and avoid braking with full force.
  • Check Engine Light: Displays as an engine-shaped icon. This light indicates that there is an issue with your engine, emissions, or components. Reduce your speed and bring your vehicle in for service as soon as possible.
  • Steering System Light: Displays as a steering wheel next to an exclamation point. This light indicates that your steering system is either not working properly or steering power may be unavailable.

BMW DASHBOARD WARNING LIGHTS: GREEN LIGHTS

BMW’s green dashboard indicator lights are meant to tell you that a particular feature is in use. Common green BMW warning lights include:

  • Fog Lights: Displays as a lamp pointing to the left plus a wavy line with three lines through it. This light indicates that you have your front fog lights on.
  • Turn Signals: Displays as an arrow pointing either left or right. These are your BMW’s turn signal indicators.
  • High Beam Assistant: Displays as 5 horizontal lines vertically stacked to the left of a shape that resembles a headlight. This light indicates that you have your high beam lights engaged.
